Flooring Trends Spotlight: Engineered Vinyl Planks

If you love hardwood, but it's out of your budget, you're not out of luck yet. There are many options on the market these days that mimic the look and feel of hardwood. Many of these types of floors are resistant to moisture and cheaper to install as well.

Engineered vinyl planks, also known as luxury vinyl flooring, are one of the hottest flooring trends right now. EVP creates a luxurious space and mimics the look of hardwood.

If you're interested in learning more about vinyl planks, keep reading. We'll go over the many benefits and options available to you.

What Is Luxury Vinyl Flooring?

When it comes to commercial and residential flooring, luxury vinyl remains a popular choice. Vinyl works well in bathrooms and kitchens as it's easy to keep clean and maintain.

Old vinyl used to look cheap, but these days, luxury vinyl has an aesthetically pleasing look and feel. There are different types of vinyl flooring, which can get confusing for some homeowners. Thankfully, the differences are easy to explain.

Luxury vinyl flooring (LVF) is an affordable alternative to hardwood with many benefits. LVF may refer to luxury vinyl planks (LVP), luxury vinyl tile (LVT), sheet vinyl, or engineered vinyl plank (EVP) flooring.

As the name implies, vinyl planks come in a plank form and are easily installed using a tongue-and-groove system.

The EVP Difference

There's a reason that EVP is one of the most popular flooring trends right now. Although vinyl floors have been around since the 1930s, engineered vinyl planks are a far cry from your grandmother's flooring.

Engineered vinyl plank (EVP) has a rigid fiberboard core. EVP flooring actually has four layers: a wear layer, decorative coating, core layer, and base film.

The wear layer protects the top of the plank. It's thick enough to handle everyday traffic, wear and tear, and spills.

The decorative coating is the next layer, and it's the part that resembles wood. The design coating is what makes EVP look so similar to hardwood. In fact, some manufacturers even use 3D images to create a realistic look.

The core layer is made of a wood or stone polymer composite. The construction of engineered vinyl plank flooring allows it to reduce sound and provide warmth, which makes it so popular.

Finally, the base film is a thin layer of rubber at the bottom of a plank. Not all EVP flooring has a base film.

Engineered vinyl planks are one of the more durable flooring materials out there. Unlike hardwood, it's waterproof.
